In just a few short years, Helping Young People Excel Summer Learning Program director Kenyatta Simmons has learned that community partnerships are the key to reaching as many children as possible.

The Helping Young People Excel Summer Learning Program reached almost 200 children during the 2026 program. Children participating received books and learning materials. Various summer programs work with HYPE to give children a boost in learning during the summer.

Simmons, who is Alexander City Schools assessment  and accountability director, said the program began in 2021 as a way to bring students and the community together.
