City approves demolition of downtown buildings

City leaders and the Alexander City Historic Preservation Commission last Wednesday review a site plan map of downtown in preparation for the demolition of two historic buildings.

Two pieces of downtown history will officially be demolished after a city meeting last Wednesday.

In a split vote Wednesday, the Alexander City Historic Preservation Commission held a public hearing on whether to grant the city council a certificate of appropriateness for demolishing the former city hall and courthouse.

The buildings that once housed Alexander City City Hall and the Alexander City Police Department have remained empty for almost three years, but the property surrounding the area may have just found a use after last Wednesday's meeting.

Town Hall

Alexander City Mayor Woody Baird took part in a town hall meeting last year on what might happen to the old police department and city hall in downtown Alexander City.

Main Street board president JoAnna Banks and Larkin Radney in May presented design renderings to the Alexander City City Council for a potential performing arts center that could be located downtown.
