The government shutdown has been a sort of nebulous, abstract threat that has been looming for months. But as of yesterday, the signs of the shutdown manifested in concrete ways here in Tallapoosa County.

At Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, there is a new stillness that has set in. The doors are locked, the gates are barricaded, and save for a few law enforcement personnel, the park has become a ghost town.
