A woman with local ties recently received top honors at an abstract veterinary competition for a presentation she gave explaining how she helped surgically correct priapism in her horse, Sonny.

Heather Austin, a fourth-year veterinary student at Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, competed in the Society for Theriogenology Student Abstract Competition in Seattle Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. Austin placed second in the competition for her presentation, “Surgical correction of priapism in an 18-year-old quarter horse gelding.”
