REWIRING BRAINS, CHANGING LIVES Couey named Stephens Teacher of the Year

Duanna Couey was named the Nathaniel H. Stephens Elementary School Teacher of the Year.

For Duanna Couey, becoming a teacher was never on her radar for a career. For 20 years, she was a banker, but it wasn’t until she had her daughter that her career took a turn. Now, she is a certified academic language therapist and reading interventionist at Nathaniel H. Stephens Elementary School, where she was recently named Teacher of the Year.

“I was a banker for 20 years and my daughter had dyslexia,” Couey said. “Every -ia there was with it — dyscalculia, dysgraphia. She was basically my inspiration, just a very intelligent person.”
