The stance is the foundation that supports your swing, so it’s essential to get this correct. The width of your stance will depend on the club you are swinging. The longer the club (driver/long irons), the wider the stance. The reason for this is that the harder you swing, the larger the base that’s needed to support it. A good rule of thumb is for a driver and long irons, the inside of your feet should be shoulder width apart. As you swing your shorter irons, you can naturally narrow it to where the outsides of your feet are shoulder width apart for a wedge. The easiest way to check this is at home in a mirror. Feel and real are rarely the same, so what you think you may be doing isn’t necessarily the case. Next up in a proper stance is alignment. Can you imagine shooting a gun and hitting your target with poor alignment? The same goes for golf! There are a few things you can control in golf, and one is your alignment. To aim correctly, place a club on your ball line and point it a hair right of your target. Next, place another club on the ground just inside your foot line and make that club parallel to the club on your ball line. What you will notice is that your feet will actually be aimed left of the target if you are aiming correctly. In golf, this is called parallel left. As you can see, getting the correct stance is quite simple and one of the few things in golf that you can control. Take care of the small things, such as your grip and stance, and watch your scores improve!Â
