Across the nation gas prices have been surging on the heels of rising crude oil prices. In most places, $3 or more per gallon of gasoline has become a reality. This has left some wondering where their dollar goes when they feed the pump.

According to the United States Department of Energy, for every dollar spent at the pump, about 68 cents covers the cost of crude oil.
