Recently, my mom was hospitalized for a minor heart problem. Thankfully she’s OK, and if anything it made her realize she needs to retire soon. When I was on the phone with her a few days ago after visiting my family in Huntsville, she said while she was worried about being a good wife, raising her kids and making sure she was the best accountant in the building (she’s in her sixth year of being the chief financial officer of the Huntsville Housing Authority) she never really chased her dreams. Now, she did say this after saying she was going to retire and become a flight attendant …

Plans have changed since then, but I told her that she did exactly what was expected of her generation to do. She grew up in a low income household, so dreams were not something that she was pushed to go after. At least not more than college, a good career and an even better husband.
