When I got the notification last week my pick for the greatest basketball player of all time was going to become a Philadelphia 76er, to say I was speechless would be an understatement. James’ final free agency saga was interesting to me for the first few days, but it quickly became a slog with very little verifiable news on his leanings and plenty of empty speculation fueled by sportsbooks and betting odds.

We all thought he would round out his career back in one of the two places that made him the player he is today: Cleveland or Miami. I personally was pretty sure he’d end up in Miami, not for any particular reason but purely from a gut instinct. There were some rumblings from Pat Riley through the multiple weeks of the saga that swayed me, but at the end of the day I knew James would keep it all very close to the vest.
