In a high-stakes do-or-die situation for each team, Wetumpka’s and Stanhope Elmore’s soccer teams faced off last week. Wetumpka’s boys and girls teams swept SEHS in the last meeting between the rivals, winning 4-2 and 1-0, respectively. For this go-around, each individual team had to fight not only to represent its school, but also to claim the top seed in Class 6A Area 4 and the subsequent home first round playoff game.

In order for it to surpass Wetumpka in the area standings, SEHS’ girls team had to not only win on the scoreboard, but also via goal differential. The Mustangs accomplished the lofty feat, winning 2-1 and overcoming Wetumpka to repeat as the Area 4 champions. On the boys side, the Mustangs have played one of the toughest schedules in the state and competed well, although their record does not reflect it well. After SEHS trounced Wetumpka last season, the Indians took it upon themselves to return the favor, beating the Mustangs 3-1 for a total goal differential of 7-3.
