Ana Sofia Meyer / TPI Wetumpka guard Lexie Smith (5) goes up for a jumpshot while Stanhope Elmore's Aubrey Newton (2) closes out. Wetumpka lost in a close back-and-forth game, 62-57.

It’s impossible to build a championship pedigree in one game, let alone in one season. The Wetumpka Indians have a young, but talented and ambitious group of players with their ‘big three’ all being underclassmen.

The Indians faced off against the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s No. 5-ranked Stanhope Elmore on Friday night in the second iteration of the rivalry and second week of area play. Compared to the first performance against the Mustangs in which they lost by a 20-point margin, Wetumpka looked like a different team – especially on defense.
