Tallassee Bell

Cliff Williams / TPI The Armory will sooon have a bell in the bell tower.

The last time the bell rang over the textile mills in Tallassee was to celebrate the end of World War II. It will ring again thanks to a grant from the Alabama Historical Commission.

“It had been replaced by a train whistle powered by steam from the boiler room of the 1844 mill,” Fred Randall Hughey said. “It would ring on special occasions. The bell was removed from the tower in 1957.”
