The actions of two Morgan County sheriffs – one who purchased a half load of corn dogs and fed them to county inmates for three meals a day until all were consumed and pocketed resulting savings and another who admitted investing surplus meal money in a used-car business that went bankrupt – were instrumental in 49 Alabama sheriffs’ entanglement in a lawsuit filed Jan. 5 by the advocacy groups Southern Center for Human Rights and the Alabama Appleseed Center for Law and Justice.

Frank Knaack of the Alabama Appleseed Center for Law and Justice said the suit was filed because Appleseed and Southern Center for Human Rights “are seeking records pertaining to how those funds are used. So we sent multiple open records requests over the past six months and the 49 sheriffs named have failed to adequately respond.”
