A decade ago the Wetumpka High School NERDS started competing in Greenpower Racing, an all electric car racing league.

The king and queen of the Order of Cimarron stopped by early in the morning to greet everyone.The event attracted teams from four states.

Cliff Williams / TPI The course at the Wetumpka Sports Complex was a 1.2 mile road course. It was meant to test the drivers and the cars ability in a safe manner.

Cliff Williams / TPI The Greenpower cars are powered by an electric motor and two batteries. Depending on the condition of the battery and motor can cause the car to slow down so it is imperative for drivers to not overuse the cars early in a race.

Cliff Williams / TPI The Greenpower cars handle much like a race car. Some teams in the custom division widened the front axle trying to add stability. Some teams install radios allowing communication with the pits.
