Strikeouts not likely for Sewell nominees

According to Joe Sewell’s New YorK Times obituary, he played his entire Major League career using only one bat (a 40-ouncer he dubbed “Black Betsy.”),which he kept in shape by rubbing with a Coke bottle and seasoning with chewing tobacco.

Joe Sewell must have taken some time for assessment after his 1933 season, his last in the major leagues. That year, Sewell hit only .273. The previous year he’d hit just .272. Those were the lowest two batting averages the Titus native registered in his 14 big league seasons.

His skills were obviously somewhat diminished.
