Sophomore reciever Kaleb Ballard (5) and the Wetumpka football team look to carry momentum into the second game of the year against Chelsea.

With a momentum-building win behind them in the season opener, the Wetumpka Indians are back home this week, welcoming the Chelsea Hornets for a Class 6A non-region showdown. This is the fifth matchup between these two programs, dating back to 2012 when Wetumpka claimed the first win in the series, 48-21.

Last season’s showdown was a close game that ended in the Hornets’ favor, 15-14. The Indians came out swinging in the first half, capitalizing on a mishandled opening kickoff for a rushing touchdown from since-graduated running back Tudrius Hetherington. Wetumpka’s defense turned another Chelsea mistake into a comfortable lead after safety Micah Bigelow, who graduated after last season, notched an interception and returned it for a touchdown.Â
