Even relentless optimists have learned to be cautious about the Middle East. Prospects for peace in that region can crack as easily as an egg dropped from the walls of old Jerusalem onto the ancient stones below.

But a new flicker of hopefulness is beginning to spread, and here’s a central reason: both sides, perhaps for the first time, now realize it is in their own economic interest to pursue a political solution.
