Alabama’s infant mortality rate has reached a record low with 9.1 deaths per 1,000 live births – 538 deaths – in 2002.

Tallapoosa County also has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the state with only two infant deaths in 2002, according to Albert Woolbright, Alabama Department of Public Health’s spokesman.
