Because of concerns and liability issues, Russell Medical Center’s healthcare workers who qualify for the first phase smallpox immunizations will not be participating in the vaccinations, according to Beth Turner, director of education and safety and infection control.

“We don’t feel that the Homeland Security Act addresses the liability issues,” Turner said. “We are not going to participate in Phase I due to liability issues that the government hasn’t cleared up. But we will watch for Phase II.”
