Since 1925, fire departments across the nation have observed Fire Prevention Week in observance of the 1871 Great Chicago Fire that killed more than 250 people and destroyed more than 17,400 structures.

Alexander City Fire Department has observed the week for a number of years and this year’s focus is “Use Candles with Care.”
