The sky is not falling, but around what is now Wetumpka, it may have appeared that way about 85 million years ago.

At the time Wetumpka would have been under the sea and a meteor the size of a college football stadium was screaming towards earth. The collision caused what is now known as the Wetumpka Impact Crater. Downtown Wetumpka is built on part of it. Parts of the crater can be seen in the Coosa River from its banks in downtown. Even the rocks at Moccasin Gap are likely debris from the massive collision.
