Everyone has had those weeks where it seems like absolutely nothing goes their way, to the point that it’s almost comical. As grueling as it is to try to get through to the next moment when the powers that be have decided to put you through the ringer a few times, these are the times when the cheesiest inspirational slogans really seem to hit home. And even then, sometimes “staying positive" feels toxic and useless; in those moments, keeping a pragmatic approach is the best way to keep your head above water.

First, it’s OK to acknowledge how bad it’s gotten. Be honest with yourself and those who are closest to you. Hiding your struggles is never the best choice when it comes to getting better, because sometimes what you’re doing isn’t enough and it’s time to ask for help from those who love and care about you, whether it be friends or family or even coworkers. Recognizing it’s simply one of those weeks removes the pressure to perform and allows you to go back to doing your best in every moment, eating three meals a day, showering, doing laundry, getting to work on time. Shifting from a growth mindset to a survival mindset is OK in certain situations, and those who love and support you will understand that.
