Wetumpka shifts down to Class 5A Region 2 after AHSAA reclassification was announced on Friday, January 23. The Indians will reprise their region games against seven of the eight teams in the new region, including Stanhope Elmore.

When the Alabama High School Athletic Association pushed back its reclassification announcement from Dec. 15, 2025 to Jan. 23, 2026 coaches and athletic directors expected major changes to take place – what those changes would be, however, were highly speculated yet unpredictable.

In a morning press conference on Friday, the AHSAA did away with the previous seven-class system which had private schools and public schools facing off in the regular and post-seasons. The shift returns to a six-classification model which was last in place during the 2013-14 season. The most significant change is the controversial division between private and public schools in post-season competition until the next reclassification in 2028-29. Two new classifications were created for private schools, Class A (17 schools) and Class AA (43).
